Although retired, Nicholas and Elodie d’Ombrain have long-standing professional interests. These derive mostly from their careers working for the federal government in Ottawa; they also reflect the subsequent years spent as consultants and their earlier academic studies. Nicholas has a long-standing interest in defence administration, which in turn led him to a career as a specialist in the machinery of government. He was a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies from 1969 to 2010, and in his early career he wrote extensively about civil-military relations. Elodie’s interest in literature led to an honours degree and a career, first as a staffer on Parliament Hill and then in government communications.
